Maha Kumbh 2025 Ends: A Look Back at the 2013 Kumbh Mela and Its Challenges

A Grand Religious Gathering Comes to a Close

The Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj has witnessed a spectacular culmination, drawing millions of devotees from across India and the world. As the grand event concludes, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath brought up the 2013 Kumbh Mela to contrast governance styles between the BJP and the Samajwadi Party (SP), which was in power at the time.

Yogi Adityanath’s Attack on SP Over 2013 Kumbh

During a speech on February 24, Adityanath alleged that the 2013 Kumbh, overseen by Akhilesh Yadav’s administration, was poorly managed. He specifically criticized the appointment of then-Minister Azam Khan as the event’s in-charge, arguing that the SP government’s handling of the Mela was flawed and insensitive to Hindu sentiments.

His remarks were seen as a direct political attack, aimed at drawing comparisons between the meticulous planning of the 2025 Kumbh under BJP rule and the challenges faced during the 2013 event.

The 2013 Kumbh Mela: A Recap

Held between January 14 and March 10, 2013, the Kumbh Mela saw an estimated 12 crore devotees gather in Prayagraj, with around 3 crore participating on the auspicious Mauni Amavasya day. The UP government allocated Rs 1,152 crore for arrangements, including infrastructure, sanitation, and security.

Despite its grandeur, the event was marred by a tragic stampede at Prayagraj railway station on February 10, leading to multiple casualties. The incident led to criticism of the government’s lack of preparedness, with the then Kumbh Nodal Minister offering to resign. The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) later released a report highlighting administrative failures.

2025 vs. 2013: What Has Changed?

The Maha Kumbh 2025 has introduced several advancements in crowd management, digital monitoring, and security. AI-powered surveillance, drone monitoring, and enhanced medical facilities ensured a safer experience for pilgrims this year.

Unlike 2013, where the administration struggled with crowd control, this year’s event saw better coordination between government agencies, law enforcement, and local authorities. The BJP-led government has taken credit for its seamless execution, contrasting it with the lapses of the past.

The Political and Cultural Significance of Kumbh Mela

Beyond its spiritual importance, the Kumbh Mela has always carried political undertones. Every ruling party in Uttar Pradesh has leveraged the event to showcase its governance capabilities. For Yogi Adityanath, invoking the 2013 Kumbh serves as both a reminder of past failures and a testament to BJP’s governance in 2025.

A New Benchmark for Future Kumbh Melas?

As the Maha Kumbh 2025 comes to an end, the focus now shifts to the legacy it leaves behind. While political debates continue, what remains undeniable is the cultural and religious significance of Kumbh Mela as the largest gathering of humanity.

The improvements in infrastructure and safety protocols set a new precedent for future Kumbh Melas. Whether or not political narratives continue to shape its organization, the Kumbh remains a timeless testament to India’s spiritual heritage.
