The Election Commission of India (ECI) has resolved a long- standing dispute between two factions of the Shiv Sena party over the use of the party’s name and symbol. On Friday, the ECI announced that the Eknath Shinde faction would retain the name “Shiv Sena” and the symbol “Bow and Arrow.”
The decision comes after a year-long legal battle between the two factions, which started when Shinde revolted against Uddhav Thackeray. The ECI also criticised the undemocratic structure of the party’s constitution, which allows for the appointment of office bearers without elections. The ruling highlights the politics in India, where internal disputes in political parties can result in prolonged legal battles over the use of party symbols and names.
