Indian Navy Chief Highlights Unchanging China-Pakistan Maritime Alliances Amid Growing Security Concerns

As India prepares for Navy Day 2024, Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi took the opportunity to address some of the most pressing strategic issues facing the Indian Navy, particularly with respect to China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region. Despite some positive shifts in India-China relations, the Navy Chief underscored that China’s long-term strategy in the region remains unchanged.

He also focused on Pakistan’s increasing naval capabilities, which are bolstered by China’s continuous support in the form of submarines, warships, and military technology.

China’s Indo-Pacific Strategy: Unyielding and Persistent

Admiral Tripathi emphasized that China’s strategy in the Indo-Pacific has not shifted, despite recent diplomatic discussions. The Navy Chief noted that China’s actions, particularly in the South China Sea, continue to destabilize the region.

“We are fully prepared to deal with the ongoing challenge that China’s presence in the region poses,” Admiral Tripathi remarked, highlighting India’s ongoing vigilance and readiness.

Pakistan’s Growing Naval Strength Backed by China

The partnership between China and Pakistan, especially in the naval sector, continues to raise concerns in India. Admiral Tripathi pointed out that Pakistan is set to expand its naval fleet to 50 ships in the coming decade, with China playing a central role in this growth.

“China’s support to Pakistan is a matter of strategic concern, and we are actively monitoring this development,” he added.

India’s Focus on Naval Modernization and Acquisition of Advanced Technology

India’s naval modernization efforts are focused on strengthening its underwater capabilities and enhancing air superiority at sea. Admiral Tripathi confirmed that India is moving forward with key acquisitions such as the Rafale Marine aircraft and additional Scorpene submarines.

“These acquisitions are expected to be finalized soon and will provide a significant boost to India’s naval combat capabilities,” he confirmed.

India’s naval defense strategy is heavily focused on acquiring advanced technology. Admiral Tripathi discussed the acquisition of 26 Rafale Marine aircraft and the upcoming induction of additional Scorpene-class submarines, which are crucial for enhancing India’s deterrent capabilities in the face of rising threats.

“We are committed to enhancing our operational readiness and strengthening our defense infrastructure,” the Navy Chief remarked.

India’s Collaborative Efforts for Maritime Security in the Indo-Pacific

The Indian Navy is also committed to bolstering its maritime security collaborations, particularly through the Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness (IPMDA).

Admiral Tripathi emphasized that India is working alongside its allies in the Indo-Pacific to maintain peace and stability in the region.

“We are committed to ensuring security across the Indo-Pacific, and our collaborations with other nations are key to achieving this,” he concluded.
