Massive earthquake in New Zealand causes widespread shaking
Tens of thousands of New Zealanders experienced a 6.3 magnitude earthquake centred near Wellington last night, causing widespread shaking across the country. While there were no immediate reports of major damage, the quake has raised concerns about the preparedness of the country for future seismic events. The National Emergency Management Agency has advised that aftershocks should be expected, adding to the crisis already caused by the initial earthquake. Despite this, there is no current tsunami threat. The earthquake highlights the need for New Zealand to continue to invest in seismic safety measures, to ensure that the country is as prepared as possible in the event of future earthquakes or other natural disasters.
